Kylie Jenson plopped her tray down on the table and sat down, staring sullenly at her food. She'd just arrived at the school a few days before, and was beginning to feel a little homesick. She missed her father and her brothers, and even her dog Bear. And this school food wasn't really helping matters. She'd come into the cafeteria, hoping to find some macaroni and cheese, or some chicken noodle soup. Basically, what Kylie had wanted was comfort food. Unfortunately, there was none of that to be found, at least not that day. So she had settled for a salad, applesauce, and a bottle of citrus green tea. Oh well, at least they had her favorite drink on stock.
The girl picked up her fork and jabbed it moodily into the pile of lettuce. In result, bits of salad flew out of her bowl and all over her tray, getting into the applesauce. Kylie frowned as she tried to pick out the sticky lettuce.
"Well this is just great, isn't it, Ricky?" she mumbled to herself, mentioning the name of the imaginary friend she'd had since she was five. She knew he wasn't real, of course, but she liked having someone to talk to, and in the absence of a real person, she figured talking to an imaginary friend was a bit better than talking to herself.

Vix walked into the cafeteria, finding it mostly empty. There were few students scattered about, but the one that caught Vix's attention was a thin, shorter girl, sitting alone, who appeared to be talking to herself. Her brown hair feel against her back, lying perfectly straight. She had a pleated pink plaid mini skirt on, with a white blouse. She would be a perfect school uniform model, if there was one.
Vix got in line, and after getting nothing more than an apple and a bottle of water, he made up his mind to sit with the girl. He sat at the same table as her, bet kept his distance. He sat there silently, keeping his gaze down, but would occasionally glance at her. She was wearing a cute tie that matched her skirt. He smirked. She was quite cute. But all Vix would ever have the chance to do is look. He was the weird loner boy that no one really liked, that's how it had always been, and that's how it would always be. Vix didn't care anymore, he was used to it. He was the freak of the freaks. And she, was the freak who didn't seem freaky at all. More magical than anything. Vix imagined she was a fairy wing type, they'd suit her.

Kylie continued to moodily pick at her salad. Why did they have to put those little pieces of dried bread in there? It didn't taste anything like the salads she had at home. The least they could've done was have the salad stuff in a salad bar, instead of all premade up. The only thing you even got to pick was your dressing. What sort of lame salad was that?
After a while, Kylie noticed that a boy had sat down at her table. She looked up, blushing deeply in embarrassment, wondering how long he'd been sitting there before she'd noticed him. I hope he doesn't think I've been ignoring him she thought to herself, that wouldn't exactly get our friendship off to a great start.
"Oh... I'm terribly sorry, I didn't notice you'd sat down here," she said apologetically, nervously fidgeting with the charm bracelet around her wrist. She gave the boy a smile, hoping it didn't look fake. She liked making friends, and she hoped that this boy would be no exception. "I'm Kylie. Who are you?" As she spoke, Kylie looked the boy over. Even though he was sitting, he was still exceptionally tall, and Kylie had a feeling that he would tower over her if they were standing. His hair reminded her of raven feathers, and he looked to be pretty thin.

Vix looked up from the apple he'd been spinning on the table absently, not truly hungry at all. At least now he knew the girl was friendly. He turned his attention to her, not looking very interested. "Vixen," he mumbled, barely audible. He glanced back down at the apple, and spun it around again, knocking it into his unopened bottle of water, which he snagged up before it could even completely fall over. He looked back at her, clearing his throat, then repeated himself, sicne she didn't seem to understand him. "My name's Vixen."
He leaned back in his chair, and stared down at the table, his hair fell in front of his eyes. He peaked back over at the girl. He was looking at her face but that's not where his attention was. For a small girl she had quite the chest. She was thin, but still a curvy little girl. He averted his attention back to her face. She had pretty eyes, with thick lashes. They seemed to sparkle in the lighting. Vix half smiled.

Kylie smiled as he spoke, glad he'd repeated himself, since she hadn't quite caught what he'd said the first time. She'd probably looked kind of confused, anyway.
"Vixen? That's a nice name. Are you new to the school?" she asked as she leaned forward, propping her elbows on the table. He salad was pretty much forgotten by now; it wasn't any good, anyway. He had leaned back in his chair, and his hair had fallen into his eyes, giving him a mysterious sort of look. Kylie wondered what sort of past he'd had. He smiled, seemingly at her, and she returned the favor. She couldn't quite see his eyes, with the hair over them, and she subconsciously folded her arms in front of her chest without really realizing what she was doing.

Vix nodded. "Just got here today," he said, trying to speak clearly. He would mumble a lot, force of habit, he supposed. He felt a little less awkward talking to her for some reason, whatever it was, he liked it. He felt a little more at ease, but in a way that put him more on the edge. She seemed like a sweet girl, nothing to worry about, he thought. But then he questioned himself for a moment, and quickly shook the thought from his head.
"How long have you been here?" He asked, trying to start a conversation, as long as he kept her talking, he wouldn't have to. Ask some things that didn't really matter and get her rambling, that would do just fine. Unless, of course, she started asking questions too.

Kylie sighed and frowned. She should've known that this would come to the "how long have you been here" question, and it just brought back more memories of home. "I've only been here a couple of days. The headmistress gave me a tour of the place, but I'm still finding it sort of hard to find my way around. This school is so huge! It's way bigger than any other school I've ever seen." Even just looking around the cafeteria, Kylie knew it was true. The lunchroom itself was about the same size as her old school.
"So what about you?" she asked Vixen, hoping to get him talking a little more. He seemed to be a sort of quiet person, and she liked to be able to hold nice, involved conversations with others. "Have you ever been to a school this big before?"

Vix shook his head, "No, I've never really been to a school at all. I spent most of my time being home schooled in group homes. This place is giant though. I haven't really gotten a true tour though. A professor tried to show me around but he didn't know the place very well himself. But at least here I do't hit my head on every doorway," He smiled, half chuckling. He looked back at the girl, she actually seemed to have an honest interest in the conversation. Too bad Vix didn't care much for small talk, but he guessed this would have to be how he'd make friends, if he decided he wanted any. This was about the most he'd ever talked to anyone. Being quiet was just something about him, and he didn't understand how this girl could so easily change that. He shut his mouth. He'd be himself before he acted otherwise to please other. He shook his head, letting hair fall back in front of his face and he picked up his apple again, debating if he wanted to eat it.

Kylie nodded. He seemed like the type that would probably hit his head a lot in other places that weren't quite so large. The school seemed to be a remodeled Gothic castle or something, so the ceilings and doorways were all very high. She'd never had problems with hitting her head on things, but she wasn't exactly the tallest person in the world, either.
"Maybe if you go in to the office, Headmistress Flynn will give you a better tour, then," Kylie suggested. She hadn't met any of the other teachers yet, besides the art professor, who was a girl, so Kylie didn't know who it was who had given Vixen a tour. She supposed that professor was probably just as new as her. "I don't know how much good it will do, though. I think this is probably more one of those places where you just have to be there a while to get used to everything. Didn't you get a map in your starter packet?"

Vix shrugged. "I haven't looked in it yet. I'll find my way around, can't be that hard." He said, wiping the apple off on his jeans. It took him a second to realize he had just wiped dirt on his white pants, and he quickly brushed it off. It was hard enough for him to find pants in his size, ruining a perfectly good pair didn't seem to be the brightest idea. He quietly sighed at his own stupidity then bit into the apple. It was sour, and didn't taste right. He spat it out in his napkin and sat the apple down. "Gotta love cafeteria food..." He mumbled. He wondered if there was any food in the cafeteria that wasn't completely and utterly disgusting. He doubted it. There was no reason for them to have good food, it was just what they had to feed us with, and as long as we could live off of it, it was enough.

Kylie was about to warn Vix about the apples- she's had one the day before and it had tasted awful- but he bit into it before she had a chance. She laughed as he spit it out into his napkin.
"I was about to warn you about those," she said in her own defense, "They aren't the most pleasant-tasting fruits I've ever eaten." She nodded and rolled her eyes sarcastically at his snarky comment. "Oh, yeah, it's the best ever. Never mind that it tastes like either garbage or cardboard." She picked up her fork and speared some lettuce, sticking it in her mouth and chewing, looking up in the air as if she was considering the flavor. She took a long time to chew, appearing to be savoring the taste, then swallowed dramatically.
"Yep," she said after she swallowed, "definitely cardboard-esque."

Vix smirked, and let out a quiet laugh. "I bet."
He picked up his bottle of water and toyed with it. "Wonder if the water here is bad too..." He said, his voice low. For a moment, he thought that was not possible, then he remembered some of the water he'd tasted before, and how horrid it was. He bit at the inside of his lip, his smile faded. Looking down, he set the bottle down on the table, and picked at his nail.
He remembered he was supposed to be having a conversation, and snapped his attention back up to Kylie. Bangs hid his eyes, and he shook them out of the way so she could see his eyes. "It's not polite to hide your eyes," he thought to himself. He stopped picking at his nails, resting his hands on the table.

Kylie shrugged. She didn't really know what the water tasted like here. She wasn't a huge fan of the taste of bottled water anyway, so she hadn't tried it. All she'd drank here was their green tea which, in her opinion, was pretty good.
"I guess I don't know about the water. It looks clean to me; probably not bad. But if you want a really good thing to drink, you should try some of this green tea. It's delicious," she advised, shaking the bottle slightly to emphasize her point. She took a swig of the drink, then, pointed at Vix's bangs. "You should probably get your hair cut," she said bluntly. She never was one to beat around the bush, no matter how new you were to her. "People might think you're blocking them out if you keep your bangs over your eyes like that."

Vix nodded. "Too bad I don't like tea..." He mumbled. Then, realizing her remark about his hair was right, he pulled a blade out of his pocket, grabbed his hair and sliced it off, letting his hair fall to the table. He whisked it away, returning the blade to his pocket. He sighed and blew upwards, flustering his hair enough to let it fall back into the proper place. "That good enough for ya'?" He asked, snidely, a smirk on his face. "Or is it too short for you now?" Oh how he loved being cocky, even though she really didn't deserve it, but maybe his remark will keep her putting her two cents in where it really isn't wanted or needed. He didn't like overly opinionated people, quite frankly they ticked him off. If he didn't ask for someone's opinion on something, he didn't want to hear it.

Kylie watched, amused, as Vixen gave himself an impromptu haircut right there at the table. He was being a smart-alec, but Kylie found it amusing. Besides, she'd dealt with cocky people like that before; her own brother was that way. So, instead of freaking out, she gave him an impish grin and a wink.
"I like it," she pronounced, trying to keep herself from laughing. It really did look better now, to be truthful, but the way he'd cut it was so quick and snarky that it was almost funny. "It looks really good on you. I'm not lying, either."
"Sorry if my opinion offended you," she apologized afterward. She did feel a little bad for telling him to get a haircut, but it was just a suggestion, and he didn't have to do it. "Though if my opinion always gets such swift results, I might have to say it out loud more often."
